You can travel to different parts of Agra using different modes of transport like taxi, tempo, auto-rickshaw and cycle rickshaw from the Taj Mahal area. Prepaid taxis and autos from the railway station are available. Prepaid transport is also available for excursions in and around the city limits. Bicycles can be hired on hourly basis from different parts of the city. It is to be remembered that no diesel or petrol vehicle are allowed to ply in the Taj Mahal area. Battery-operated buses, horse-driven tongas , rickshaws and other pollution-free vehicles are allowed to conserve the beauty of this great monument.
The cycle-rickshaw is the best way of getting about Agra . Its smooth gliding motion and leisurely rate of progress are in keeping with the pace of life in this old world city. The rickshaw-boy jungles his way through the crowded bazaars, exchanging insults with tonga-drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists; but once on the broad Mall or Taj Road , his curses change to a carefree song and he freewheels along the tree-lined avenues. Old colonial style bungalows still stand in large compounds shaded by Peepal, banyan, neem and jamun.
City Bus Service : UPSRTC operates city buses to and from the main archaeological sites.
Taxies : Air Conditioned/non air-conditioned taxis are available, without meter, at the railway stations, airport, hotels and Partap Pura.
Other transport : Un-metered auto-rickshaws, tongas and cycle rickshaws are available, rates of which are negotiable.
Taxis, tongas, cycle rickshaws are available throughout the city. Charges vary according to the distance .
It is not very frequent but a tempo will take
you from the GPO to Chowk, nera the Great Imambara. there are also buses from Chowk to the railway station or you could take a rickshaw from Hazratganj to Aminabad and then a bus to Chowk. The two Imambaras and the Jami masjid are all around the Chowk area, while Shah Najaf is in Hazaratganj and the Residency is about midway between the two. A Tonga tour of the historic areas of Lucknow is a quite essential Lucknow experience. Most locals take a 6-seaters which run between the station.
